Your home is where you should feel safest. But if you just moved into a new house in Portland, or bought an investment property in Salem, ask yourself: Who else has a copy of the key? Previous owners? Contractors? Realtors?
At Locksmith Near You, we specialize in restoring your peace of mind. We provide comprehensive residential security solutions that keep intruders out while making access convenient for you and your family.
The “Safe Home” Promise:
🏡 Respect for Your Property: We wear shoe covers and clean up after every job.
👮 Background-Checked Techs: Every technician is vetted and licensed (CCB). We don’t send strangers to your doorstep.
🔧 Quality Hardware: We install locks guaranteed to last in the Pacific Northwest weather.
Most homeowners think they need to replace the entire lock hardware when they lose a key. This is a myth.
What is Rekeying?
Instead of drilling new holes and buying expensive hardware, we simply change the internal pins of your existing lock.
The Result: Old keys stop working immediately. New keys work perfectly.
The Cost: Significantly cheaper than replacing the entire handle set.
When to do it: Immediately after moving into a new home or losing a key.
Our Residential Expertise Includes:
Lock Rekeying: The most cost-effective way to secure a new home.
Deadbolt Installation: Adding high-security Grade-1 deadbolts for maximum kick-in resistance.
Smart Lock Installation: Upgrade to Keyless Entry (Keypad, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). We install brands like Schlage Encode, August, and Yale.
House Lockout Service: Locked out? We pick the lock carefully without damaging your door frame.
Mailbox & File Cabinet Locks: protecting your mail and sensitive documents from identity theft.
Sliding Door Locks: Securing the most vulnerable entry point in many Oregon homes.
Stop hiding keys under the mat. We can integrate your locks with your smartphone.

I just bought a house. Should I rekey or replace the locks?
We strongly recommend rekeying when you move into a new home. Rekeying changes the internal pin configuration so that all previous keys — from the seller, real estate agents, contractors, or anyone who had access — no longer work. It costs significantly less than replacing the entire lock hardware and provides the same security benefit. Lock replacement makes sense when the hardware itself is worn, damaged, or low-security (builder-grade deadbolts, for example). Upgrading to a Grade 1 Schlage or Kwikset deadbolt dramatically improves resistance to kick-in attacks. For most new homeowners in Portland, we recommend rekeying all exterior locks the day you take possession — it typically takes under an hour.
Can you make one key work for all my doors?
Yes — this is called a master key system, and it’s one of the most practical setups for homeowners with multiple doors. We rekey all your deadbolts so that one master key opens every door, while each door also has its own individual key (useful for rental units, housekeepers, or family members who need limited access). Schlage and Kwikset both support master key systems for residential use. The cost depends on the number of cylinders involved, and we quote it before the work is scheduled. We serve all Portland neighborhoods including the West Hills, Northeast, Southeast, and inner Eastside. Call (971) 257-4730 for a quote based on your specific door configuration.
Can I buy my own smart lock and have you install it?
Yes. We install any brand of smart lock you’ve already purchased, including Schlage Encode, Kwikset Halo, Yale Assure, and August Smart Lock Pro. The installation typically takes 30–45 minutes and includes removing the old deadbolt, installing the new hardware, testing the app connection, and walking you through the setup. If the new smart lock requires a different door prep (hole size or backset), we can handle that adjustment on-site. We also help with Z-Wave and Zigbee smart home integrations (SmartThings, Alexa, Google Home). Installation labor depends on the door, and you hear the price before the visit. We carry common smart lock models in stock if you’d prefer we source it directly with a warranty.
What should I do if I’m locked out of my house?
If you’re locked out of your Portland home, call us at (971) 257-4730. We typically arrive within 20–30 minutes anywhere in the Portland metro area, 24 hours a day including holidays. Do not try to force the door or break a window — both can cause hundreds of dollars in damage and may not even work. Our technicians use non-destructive picking and decoding tools to open most residential locks without any damage to the door or hardware. Once inside, we can rekey the lock on the spot if needed so your existing key still works. We will quote you the exact price over the phone before dispatching.
How do I know if my deadbolt is secure enough?
The most important rating to look for is ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, which is the highest security classification for residential locks. Grade 1 deadbolts withstand 250,000 open-close cycles and 10 strikes from a 75 lb weight — significantly more resistant to kick-in attacks than the Grade 3 builder-grade locks found in most new construction. Look for brands like Schlage B60N or Kwikset 980 for reliable Grade 1 options at reasonable prices. Security features to avoid: single-cylinder deadbolts near glass panels (use a double-cylinder instead), short strike plates with only 3/4-inch screws (replace with a 3-inch screw strike plate), and thumb-turn deadbolts that can be reached through a mail slot. We offer free security assessments at your home — call (971) 257-4730 to schedule.
